Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Jane Eyre is a book that i have never really read, but heard so much about. I have watched the movie and loved it so the book should be even better.

Here are some questions each person can answer to get our brains moving and start conversation:

What do you think of Jane Eyre?
Who is your favorite character and why?
Who do you relate to in the book and how?
What life lessons do you think this book teaches?
How do you like the language/style of the book?
What is your favorite part of the story?
What is your opinion of this book?

Reply to this post with your answers/comments about this book. Happy reading!

OK. I thought I would go first with the questions that I can answer right now... the rest I can do at the end.

So far i like Jane Eyre's sense of right and wrong, but can see she lacks empathy for those she doesnt understand.

My favorite character so far is their teacher Miss Temple. She is a firm, loving and fair mentor that is the one ray of sunshine for the girls in that school.

I relate to the whoas of a young girl discovering the world and realizing it is not as she would like. Life seems so unfair at times and its hard not be effected by events in our lives that change the way we see ourselves and others.

So far it is teaching me that we should rise above the attitudes of those we dislike or that hurt us. Turn the other cheek and try to understand their view points.

I love, love, love the language. I also like the way she tells the story as if it is happening right now...and then fills in the major points of what happened regarding that time in her life.

So far this is a good read!

I have always like the classics. And Jane Eyre is a really good one. I can relate to Jane's dissatisfaction with the way her life is going (who can't). And her want of something interesting to happen, some adventure. I want to travel and Jane is interested in going further afield than she has previously, as she's been in the same spot for like 10 years after all, i can understand that.
I like that in the beginning of the book she is a fighter and doesn't always meekly take the injustices that her family throws at her. And also that she learns self-control later in the school she lives and then teaches in. Her teacher Miss. Temple is a good example to model herself after. I also think her character was heavily influenced by her friend who died of consumption. She was humble and knew her failings and admitted them. I like how, when Miss Temple leaves she realizes that she is not like her as much as she thought. And really, just because you admire someone and want to be like them, doesn't mean you have to be EXACTLY like them. So she kind of throws off some of Miss Temple's influence after she marries and goes away. Then she DOES something about her desires for her life. Even though she is scared she takes a step towards what she wants out of life and hopes that it is a good step.

Ok michelle and anyone else reading this...
I loved the book! It has such wonderful language and the story is beautiful.
Jane is such a courageous woman to work so hard to find her purpose in life without compromising her morals and beliefs.
What do you think about her returning to her love? Was she going back on her previous opinion of his life or had something changed?
